Remembering Bill Smith, Pastor Burgaw Baptist Church 2018-2020
At Burgaw Baptist Church we are pursuing Christ and His purposes with His power and passion! We have two “GREAT” imperatives in Scripture from the Lord, Jesus Christ, for His church: The Great Commandment (Matt 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20). As others have noticed, we too discern at least five purposes for the church from these two passages: worship, ministry, evangelism, discipleship, and fellowship. We also recognize the priority of prayer for God’s people (Acts 2:42; 1 Thess 5:17). We are striving in “the strength that God supplies” (1 Peter 4:11) to balance our lives and ministries—both corporately and individually—to accomplish His purposes in our unique ministry setting.
WORSHIP: Worshiping God in the power of His Holy Spirit is our first priority as God’s own people through faith in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:9-10). But worship is not something confined to what takes place as we gather together on Sunday mornings. Worship is a lifestyle of sacrificial service and dedication to the Lord (Rom 12:1-2).
MINISTRY: Ministry involves serving others as the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world (Matt 9:35-38). Our ministries help us focus on building up the local church through the spiritual gifts God has given us (Rom 12:3-8) and meet needs in Jesus’ name.
EVANGELISM: Evangelism is at the heart of everything we do, for it is the Gospel message that God uses to save lost souls and change the hearts of men (Rom 1:16; 10:13-14). Therefore, all our ministries are undertaken with the priority of evangelism at the forefront.
DISCIPLESHIP: Discipleship is coming along side one another for teaching, training, equipping, and sharpening one another for growth and maturity in service to Christ. It is the lifelong process we all endeavor to undertake as we seek to follow Jesus as our supreme treasure and the Lord of our lives (Luke 14:25-35).
FELLOWSHIP: Finally, Fellowship is more than simply sharing meals together. It is sharing life together. Christ desires for the local church to be an intimate family of believers who glorify Him while shaping one another and striving to fulfill His Great Commandment and Great Commission in our community and beyond.
We are excited beyond words to be serving Christ and shepherding His people here at Burgaw Baptist Church. We would love for you to join us on our journey of faith, discipleship, and service for Jesus Christ as we seek to glorify His name together.
